Freedom Further Away - Lyrics and Inspiration

A mythical kingdom

A spell froze the land

Freedom suspended

Long enough to make amends

Creatures and prophets

Hooded in sackcloth

They’re shooting down oppression!

And you’re the Romanoffs

Hoods drawn up

Citizens call in code

Do nothing but look

Like you’ve done what you were told

Grimacing sculptures

Replaced what was beauty

Buildings like boxes

Revolutionary duty!

Wiley exiles survived in the wild

How do you dance on the ice?

On all fours

Frolic like foxes, spring is today

When minders give you “advice”

Make sport

Cavort like a crow, your magic is play

Freedom further away

A little further away

The damnedest thing

Repression by their own hand

A few comrades to watch

Maintained the enchantment

Bewitched beaten masses

Snitched on themselves

For fear the cry of

“Infidel!”

And they always had the counter-spell

How do you dance on the ice?

On all fours

Frolic like foxes, spring is today

When minders give you “advice”

Make sport

Cavort like a crow, your magic is play

Freedom further away

A little further away

Inspiration

This song is an allegorical tale inspired by so many headlines and debates I see in the nightly news about the nature of freedom and the importance of expression as a vital part. My travels have impressed on me how precious these liberties are.
